True colours

My head is like a busy radio. I wouldn’t say it’s stuck on just one station though and instead flits between one thing to another constantly. Sometimes it is thinking about mundane stuff, like what to have for dinner, other times it’s unpicking a conversation I had with someone earlier.

As well as all the chatter, there is usually music playing away in the background. This morning was no exception and I woke up to “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper, a song I haven’t heard in years. It persisted in my head for so long that I felt compelled to look up the lyrics.

The lyrics really struck a chord (no pun intended). The song asks “you with the sad eyes” not to feel “discouraged” when the “the darkness inside you can make you feel so small”. This resonates greatly. We can sometimes be our own worst critic when that negative chatter in our head takes hold. It doesn’t do us any favours.

This song to me feels like a big hug and a reminder that instead of letting that critical inner voice take up residence, perhaps it’s time to allow who we really are to shine through, “like a rainbow”. Isn’t it lovely to think of our true essence as a kaleidoscope of beautiful colours?

“If this world makes you crazy
And you’ve taken all you can bear
You call me up
Because you know I’ll be there”

True Colours performed by Cyndi Lauper. Song by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly

That scared little voice inside wants to keep us safe by putting up barriers and using masks to hide who we really are as we navigate life. But perhaps it is time to take off those masks we wear to the outside world.

Are you brave enough to set yourself free and show your authentic self? There’s always the possibility that this path may lead to happiness, fulfilment and a beautiful “rainbow”.
